Abstract Augustana's Prohibition League was one of fifteen college chapters forming the Intercollegiate Prohibition Association. Formed in 1912, eight years before the 18th Amendment to the United States Constitution (banning the manufacture, sale, and transfer of alcohol) would go into effect, the Prohibition Leauge was a proponent of the temperance movement, and supported national organizations such as the Anti-Saloon League (1893). Augustana College Social Committee records

Abstract

The Augustana College Social Committee was organized in 1937, replacing the former Board of Control of Social Activities. The group claimed to "ignore organizational frontiers, including all students in its plans." The committee planned numerous all-school social events throughout the school year, including Halloween and Christmas parties as well as a Spring picnic. This collection contains the group's meeting minutes from 1937 to 1948.

Abstract The Augustana Foreign Missionary Society was founded by students at Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois in 1886. Members of the Augustana Synod had been searching for a way to involve the church in missionary work, and the founding students enthusiastically took on the task. The Augustana Political Club, active from 1911 to 1913, began with the support of 20 students who hoped to increase awareness of politics on campus. The Political Club records, 1911-1912, contains the club's foundational documents, including a proposal letter, 6 November 1911, and the club's January 1912 constitution.

Abstract

The Augustana College Science Club was a student organization founded 7 May 1909, according to the 1910 Rockety-I yearbook, "for the purpose of promoting the study of the natural sciences." The Augustana College Science Club records, 1922-1924 and undated, consists primarily of correspondence concerning the purchase and payment of the Science Bulletin for club members, financial records, and a few scientific articles.

Abstract The Backman family was active in Galesburg, Ill., in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The head of the family was Carl August Backman, who immigrated to the United States in 1868 and began to study at Augustana College in 1875. Backman received a BA in 1881 and graduated from Augustana Theological Seminary in 1883. Abstract Elizabeth A. Nelson was born in Chesterton, Indiana in 1898. She was valedictorian of her class at Augustana College in 1921 and taught English there for one year until she married Rev. Victor E. Beck in 1922. When her husband was called to pastor a church in Mankato, Minnesota, Mrs. Beck continued her church and community service work there until her death in 1939. Conrad Bergendoff papers

Abstract Conrad Bergendoff was the fifth president of Augustana College. Bergendoff was born in rural Nebraska in 1895. He attended Augustana College, and was a member of the class of 1915. He also earned a divinity degree from Augustana Seminary. After several years Bergendoff returned to the seminary as the dean, then as the president of the seminary and the college in 1935. Erland Levi Borg was an Augustana alumnus and Lutheran minister. The Erland Levi Borg papers, 1926-1993 and undated, contains articles, pamphlets, receipts, music uniforms, and paraphernalia regarding the Augustana Concert Band European Tour of 1928 and other campus organizations. There is also biographical information regarding Borg's life after Augustana and photographs of Band Tour Reunions. Materials have been arranged into series according to accession date.
